The Apparition

A three-act play about the Artistic Process

by Philip Butera

What is the artistic process? Do artists possess an aura, a guidance that propels them from the ordinary to the influential?

The apparition is a play about discovery, a wonderland where poet, Painter, Actress, and Singer speak directly to the forces which indulge them. A witty, original narrative where myth and genius are bandied about.

An aspiring poet ponders, why can’t he be a better poet. He is surrounded by brilliant artists yet he seems always at the edge never the center. The poet confronts the elements that seem to be just out of his reach. he speaks with them, and they define themselves about how to be used to become successful, but the insecure poet would rather show his cleverness then heed their advice.

The first act brings Creativity, An arrogant yet intelligent wind. Then we meet Inspiration, an inclusive motherly breeze in the second act. Finally, the Third act brings us talent, an overbearing narcissistic gust.

While the Painter, Actress, and Singer seem to be having a dialogue with and improving their skills with the forces driving them, The poet does not comprehend the soul-changing dynamics, which drives artists to become accomplished. Even with the Painter and Actress adding insight on how artists must move forward toward greatness he remains mired in his own self-perception.

Throughout every act, this enigmatic personification that directs the artistic process forward is shown through dance, song, poetry, paintings, and visual effects.
